The Unique and Proud Jamaican People and Culture

Jamaicans have developed a very unique culture which combines a melting pot of European, African, Chinese and Indian influences, which have all shaped Jamaica throughout its history. The Spaniards brought slavery to Jamaica, and these slaves fought for the abolition of slavery and became the dominant force on the island. Jamaica was colonized by the English, until its independence in 1962. They still remain part of the commonwealth, which is a unity of nations and assists in free trade between the member nations.

The official language in Jamaica is English, although the national language and the one most used is Jamaican Patois. Although English based, it takes a heavy influence from West Africa. You’ll hear it everywhere on the island! The sound of the language has the steady, easy rhythm of the music, you’ll find it difficult not to pick up a few phrases along the way!

Although surprisingly, Christianity is the largest religion on the island, Rastafari is the most famous. It’s a mix of the Old and New Testament, but instead of God, they believe in the divine Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia (referred to as His Imperial Majesty). Hailed as the foretold second coming of the messiah, he is believed to be a true descendent of Solomon.

The beliefs are mostly shared by song, chants and spoken stories, although some written texts do exist. Rastas are well known for their use of ‘ganja’, which is actually illegal in Jamaica, although religious exemption to ease the tension between Rastas and the government was introduced in 2015.

Bob Marley is one of the most famous Jamaicans, and one that shared his Rasta cultural traditions. His music was touched with his spirituality, and he brought reggae to the world. He is so respected in Jamaica that he received a state funeral. His international message of peace and love are lessons we can all take to heart, and even more important in today’s society.

As you travel around Jamaica, you’ll hear the sounds of familiar Reggae, which will really give you that chilled tropical vibe. You’ll also catch the sounds of Ska, which has a faster beat and Rocksteady which has a much slower beat. Both of these styles originated in Jamaica and came before Reggae, but also influenced its sound.

Family in Jamaica is hugely important and everyone contributes to the raising of children. Siblings are encouraged to look after each other and everyone contributes to the upkeep of the household. Children are also expected to participate as they are given chores to do, which keeps them occupied and prevents them from sitting idle, which is frowned upon. Religious holidays are special occasions where the family will dress their best, and come together to celebrate with plenty of food and drinks.

Now that you have an insight to Jamaican culture, enjoy some time on the island with local people who will be happy to share with you more of their traditions. A Jamaican home is warm and welcoming, and you’ll learn a lot about this incredible nation!
