Finding New Ways to Travel Once COVID-19 Restrictions Are Lifted
News reports globally are speculating on the future of air travel. The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the airline industry as international borders closed. Our world, once so connected and available has been closed down, and now we’re all wondering – what happens next?
We need travel
We’ve discovered how much we need travel thanks to this crisis. Freedom of movement created international bonds and borderless connections between people that can’t be broken. Families and friends are spread across continents. Where once having family on another town was the norm, now most people have someone they love in another country. While staying in touch is possible thanks to technology it can never replace being together, which air travel made so easy. We won’t give up being close to our friends and family in other parts of the world.
Air travel may be more difficult
Many airlines have streamlined their staff and fleets as they predict travel will take time to recuperate. This means that flight schedules will likely be reduced as it will no longer be possible to operate at pre pandemic levels. This could also mean that ticket prices will rise, making travel less accessible. Disposable incomes have also been reduced thanks to international lockdowns. People may not be able to afford to travel by air if prices rise substantially as airlines try to recuperate their losses.
An opportunity to explore the world in other ways
Perhaps air travel may not be possible in the short to medium term. However, this doesn’t mean that we should give up on our travel plans! It’s time to change the way we think about travel and look at other available options. Much of the world is connected by road links, trains and by sea. Often we have chosen to fly simply because it’s the quickest option to get to our destination. Now is the time to embrace the journey and explore as we go!
We’ll see the world from a whole new perspective
Looking down at the world from 40,000 feet is an exhilarating experience, but we’re missing so much. Quaint little villages perfect for a coffee stop. Lakes and rivers with access to take a refreshing dip. An incredible restaurant off the beaten track. These can’t be seen from the sky. There is so much of the world waiting for us to explore, all we need to do is travel through it!
We’ll learn a lot
We may need a few words of a new language. We’ll figure out how to navigate in another country. We’ll explore new food, new cultures, and make even more friends! On our journey we’ll learn so much more than by sitting in an aircraft. We’ll also discover more about ourselves, and unlock skills we didn’t realize we had!
A famous saying is that ‘the journey is half the fun’. The days of flying wherever and whenever we like may be uncertain, but our love of travel will certainly adapt and overcome this challenge. We can rewrite the future of travel, and have a lot of fun along the way!
